In addition to their remarkable resilience, laminate flooring offers several key benefits:
DISADVANTAGES OF LAMINATES
While laminate is a practical choice for many scenarios, it does come with some limitations:
Introduced around 40 years ago, laminate flooring is a synthetic option created by bonding various materials together through a lamination process. Versatile, available in a wide array of styles, easy to maintain, and budget-friendly, laminate is often referred to as a “super material.” Its outstanding resilience comes from its structured composition, which includes:
Top Layer:
Typically treated with aluminum oxide, this layer is both transparent and resistant to wear and tear.
Decorative Layer:
This fundamental layer provides the laminate with its attractive appearance, available in numerous patterns and prints resembling hardwood, cork, ceramic, natural stone, and brick.
Fiberboard Core:
Made from sawdust or wood chips that are finely ground and reinforced with resins for added strength; this core is central to the laminate's construction.
Back Layer:
This layer creates a moisture barrier between the fiberboard core and the decorative layer while also enhancing the stability of the flooring for easier installation.
Underlayment:
Installing a cork or foam underlayment can significantly reduce the hollow sound specific to laminate flooring. This underlayment also serves as a moisture barrier, protecting the laminate from potential subfloor moisture, with some versions designed to combat mold and mildew.
